The National Association of Free Clinics is the only national non-profit whose mission is solely focused on the needs of free clinics and the populations they serve. When the NAFC was founded in 2001, the leaders envisioned a network of local free clinics brought together to create a voice much more powerful than could be realized on either a community or even a state-wide basis.

What is a Free Clinic? |
| "Free clinics are volunteer-based, safety-net health care organizations that provide a range of medical, dental, pharmacy, and/or behavioral health services to economically disadvantaged individuals who are predominately uninsured. Free clinics are 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations, or operate as a program component or affiliate of a 501(c)(3) organization. Entities that otherwise meet the above definition, but charge a nominal fee to patients, may still be considered free clinics provided essential services are delivered regardless of the patient's ability to pay." Our Association Goals - Be an effective advocate for free clinics and the people they serve.
- Monitor and provide input on national legislative and regulatory issues affecting free clinics' ability to provide services.
- Network with and assist state and regional free clinic associations with legislative and regulatory issues that affect their ability to provide services.
- Encourage high standards of operations and quality of care.
- Educate the general public, state and federal government leaders and health care industry leaders about free clinics and the value they contribute to the health care system.
- Increase networking among member free clinics through electronic media, resource development and meeting opportunities.
- Develop membership benefits that provide cost-saving opportunities to free clinics and leverage in-kind donations and gifts.
- Develop national fundraising and resource development opportunities with the goal of being able to send new resources to the local level.
